Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas or myomas, are non-cancerous growths that develop within the muscular wall of the uterus. Despite their prevalence, many women are unaware of their existence.

Types of Fibroids

Subserosal fibroids develop on the outer surface of the uterus. Submucosal fibroids grow within the inner cavity and may contribute to heavy menstrual bleeding and fertility issues. Intramural fibroids are embedded within the uterine wall and are the most common type.

Signs and Symptoms

Common indicators include heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, frequent urination, and an enlarged abdomen. Women with fibroids may also experience pain during intercourse or lower back pain, and in some cases, anemia or fertility issues.

Understanding Causes

Hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, play a significant role in fostering fibroid development. Genetic predisposition, age, race, and lifestyle factors — including diet rich in red meat, alcohol, caffeine, and obesity — also contribute to risk.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Procedures such as laparoscopic myomectomy and hysteroscopic myomectomy use smaller incisions, resulting in minimized trauma, less pain, and a speedier recovery. For women seeking to conceive, these procedures allow for precise removal of fibroids while minimizing damage to the uterus.
